Dental Implants - what are they? | |||||||||||||||||
A dental implant is a titanium screw, which is surgically placed
into the bone where the tooth is missing, providing there is
adequate bone to accept one. It effectively acts as a "false
root". Dental implants are made of titanium which is very biocompatible
and allows the jawbone to heal around it firmly anchoring the
implant into the jaw.
Dental implants have a metal screw-thread within them which permits other components (called "abutments") to be screwed into the implant body at a later date to support a tooth restoration such as a implant single crown or fixed implant-retained bridgework when more than one tooth is missing. Dental
implants can also be used to secure loose and uncomfortable
dentures by the use of implant attachments
and are known as implant
retained overdentures. There are many different types of
overdenture attachments such as Locator abutments, stud, magnetic or bar attachments. These have
matching components within the denture which enable the denture to
attach to the implants thus making it very stable and comfortable. |
